Where it does shine is in the presentation of the content on your Kindle and in Amazon’s cloud storage. In the Paperwhite’s updated software moves it out to the initial settings screen.Īnd speaking of that new software: The interface is a big change, though not always a big improvement, over the previous iteration. This has been around in Kindles for a while, but hidden in Accessibility settings. I find reading with the warmth turned on just a bit to be most comfortable on my eyes.Īnd for those dark-mode junkies, an inverted display - with white text on a black background - is available. Users of the Kindle app for tablets and smartphones will recognize this feature, which was first available on Kindles with the more expensive Oasis model. You can go from a traditional white background to a warmer, increasingly amber tone that looks almost like old parchment at the max setting. The new Paperwhite also gives you the ability to change the color of the LEDs that illuminate the e-ink display. On : Apple gets its mojo back Warm feeling (Make sure you have “Page refresh” turned off in the Paperwhite’s settings, so you don’t see the flash of black-to-white common with many e-readers. A faster processor makes “turning” pages happen almost instantly. There are 17 LEDs to light the e-ink display, making for a smoother, more even screen. The resolution is the same as the 2018 version, at 300 pixels per inch, but the greater real estate makes for easier reading. It’s also water-resistant, so you can read in the tub or by the pool with impunity. The base version comes with 8 gigabytes of storage, and more is available in a pricier version - more on that later. It feels great in the hand, and when reading in bed, it feels more balanced than my old model. The new Kindle Paperwhite has a larger screen - 6.8 inches compared to 6 previous models - but the size of the device is only slightly larger, with much of the screen gains coming from smaller bezels. This isn’t the Paperwhite perfected - there are some flaws here, particularly in its redesigned software - but it’s much-improved over Paperwhites of old. While I wouldn’t say the 2021 Paperwhite is as revelatory as the debut release, the refinements make for a much better reading experience. I was really buying it to replace my charge-challenged one, and only skimmed the details of its new features. So when Amazon announced a new iteration of the Paperwhite - and when it was on sale for $40 off during a Black Friday sale - I snatched one up. Now, I have to plug it in every other day. When I first got it, it would go weeks without need an electricity fix. It has held up well with one big exception: It almost won’t hold a charge. I’ve had a Paperwhite since its introduction in 2012, and it’s been the primary way I read books since then.
